To ensure a quality standard for the design and user experience, we developed an open source design system to make IoT accessible. Tools such as Abstract helped us to enable collaboration and manage the scope of the design system, which can be found on GitHub.
The complexity of the service and agile development across multiple teams challenged our team to think about the process as much as about the actual deliverables.
Although we built a comprehensive design system, the rapidly growing number of components required more extensive documentation of the fundamentals. While we were maintaining and updating the design system, the platform already provided a good basis for customers to develop applications.
Unfortunately, a product or service does not sell itself - at least in most cases. To promote the product and demonstrate the platform's capabilities, prototypes were designed and small applications were shared with potential customers.
In addition to the detailed documentation, a separate Lightelligence API Docs website was launched, which was also realised on the basis of the design system. Some of the marketing applications that were originally developed in smaller teams were discontinued or merged into much more sophisticated solutions. Probably the most important, "Building Central", was expanded to include functionalities such as the ability to add buildings and floor plans independently and a sophisticated notification management system.
In the UI/UX team, we developed new components and features together in agile processes. We played a key role in the implementation of complex IoT applications. During my time at Lightelligence, I played a key role in shaping the pitch process and later the design system and established the use of illustrations to emotionalise the platform.
